Adaptive Clothing: Making the World a More Comfortable Place

We live in a world where adaptive clothing is used to make the world more comfortable for people with disabilities. This includes clothing for wheelchair users, clothing for those with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. This type of invention has made life easier and more comfortable for many disabled individuals who need specialized clothes to function on a day-to-day basis.

What does adaptive clothing mean? It's not just about fashion! When people have a disability, they may need to wear clothes that are altered from the traditional.

What is adaptive clothing?

Adaptive clothing is adaptive apparel that makes life easier for those with disabilities. It can be anything from adaptive sportswear to adaptive fashion, but the important thing about these type of clothes is how it helps people live independently despite their disability.

Types of adaptive clothing include:

Wheelchair users need special adaptive wear like wheelchairs pants and jackets. They are adaptive clothing items that make it easier for wheelchair users to get dressed.

Those with cerebral palsy have adaptive sportswear made especially for them so they can participate in sporting activities without risk of injury from overuse or repetitive movements.

People with disabilities need adaptive fashion, like fashionable wheelchairs and cane holders, so they can have a more fulfilling life.

People with disabilities often need adaptive clothing for many different reasons, but the most common adaptive clothing items are adaptive sportswear and adaptive fashion.

Adaptive sportswear is adaptive apparel designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to participate in sports activities without risk of injury or discomfort.

Why should I wear adaptive clothing?

Wearing adaptive clothing allows people with disabilities to live more active lives without fear of injury or discomfort because their adaptive wear fits them correctly and functions as it should.

In addition, adaptive clothing can help prevent skin injuries from daily wear and tear that come with certain disabilities including spinal cord injury, spina bifida, arthritis, stroke, or amputation. In many cases, adaptive clothing makes these individuals more comfortable when they are active.

Where can I find adaptive clothes?

There are different places to find adaptive clothes. My favorite however is Silverts. They have been in business since 1930! I recently had the opportunity to work with them and try out some of their clothing. I have chronic illnesses and chronic pain. I did not know they even made adaptive clothing until I heard about Silverts.

They offer a wide array of clothing to help those with disabilities. This is important because everyone wants to live as independently as possible. If they do need a caregiver, having adaptive clothing can make getting them dressed can be difficult. Having clothes that open in the back with velcro, have snaps, or zippers are a game changer!

I tried their Women’s Nursing Home Self Dressing Bundle (Casual Elegance). This pant and jacket set is so stylish and super comfortable. I have sensitive skin due to my fibromyalgia and typically hate clothing and am very picky about the clothing I wear.

Due to my back and other medical issues, getting dressed every day is a daily struggle. My arms and shoulders are bad and pulling up pants can be a struggle. I tend to wear dresses a lot in the Spring and Summer because they are easier to put on. However, this is not ideal in the cooler months. Having pants that are easier to put on alone is a dream come true.

What makes these pants so amazing and easy to put on? Zippers! That’s right they have zippers. Not just the ordinary zipper that we are used to. These pants have 2 zippers on the side to help put the pants on easier. One zipper is at the bottom of the pant leg, and one zipper is at the waistband.

This makes it easier to put the pants on alone, or when you are helping someone else to get dressed. It comes with a matching zip-up jacket as well. This outfit is so comfortable it feels like pajamas, not real clothing. The material feels like velvet and is super soft to the touch and skin.

I wish I knew about this company when my mom was still alive. They even have clothing for wheelchair users. She had to use a powerchair and we quickly found out that some clothing actually can get stuck in her chair. Not to mention it can be hard to put clothes on someone unable to stand and move freely.

Tips for wearing adaptive clothing :

Put adaptive clothing on when already seated. This will help avoid falls and skin breakdown from someone trying to get up or down while still wearing their adaptive wear.

If you struggle putting pants over a brace, use pant hangers with clips so you can put the pants onto them before putting your leg into the pant leg.. Also, try clothing with snaps up the back.

Don’t feel like you need to wear adaptive clothing all the time! Sometimes it is nice to be able to wear normal clothing, especially when dressing for an event or social outing. However, if I know that my pain level will flare or that I am feeling extra weak, adaptive clothing is great to have on hand.

I think it’s pretty obvious that adaptive clothing needs to become a priority for everyone in the disabled community! I am so glad Silverts exists and want them to be successful because they are helping people live their lives with more comfort and dignity.
