Finding time to take care of yourself can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are three easy ways you can find some me time for yourself in your day-to-day life.

I know that for me, finding time to do things that make me feel good and help my mental health is a battle. I’m sure this is the same for many of you too, which is why I want to share 3 simple ways with you that can make a big difference in your day-to-day life. They may seem like minor changes but together they will add up to more free time and better feelings!

It’s important to take care of yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself for others. It doesn’t matter if you are a stay at-home parent, still doing the 9-5 gig, or even retired. Everyone needs to take care of themselves, so they can be the very best for others plus take care of their own health.

Sometimes finding the time for yourself can be hard. I get it, trust me. For example, I forget to take care of myself often because of all that I have going on. I’m a blogger, I have chronic illnesses and I take care of my husband who has his own chronic illnesses including mental illness.

Sometimes I create my “me time” by going to Starbucks or the library to work. If I’m not in the house, my husband can’t ask me a million questions a day.

If you don’t take time for yourself it can have a negative effect on your health. We all need time to relax and just do nothing. Or do something that we enjoy just for ourselves and recharge. Women always want to take care of our families, but we forget to take care of ourselves first. Remember, you can’t give from an empty cup.

It is important to make yourself a priority, though. Here are some tips on how you can find your “me time”.

  1. Actually, schedule it.

Are you a planner? I love to make lists and plan things out ahead of time. I want to know what I’m expected to do on any day. A perfect way to have time for yourself is to schedule it. When you are planning your month, make sure you take time for yourself. It doesn’t have to be a full day if you can’t swing that (although if you can, you should!)

It can be simple as scheduling to get your nails done, taking yourself out to lunch, scheduling a bubble bath. Whatever you enjoy doing, schedule time to do it. Then follow through. Don’t say oh I can move this, No! Keep it in your schedule. You’ll be thankful later.

  1. Inform family/friends

Remember the old saying “people can only do to us what we let them?” This is true for finding time for yourself, too. Let your family and friends know you will be unavailable unless the ABSOLUTE emergency for a set amount of time (Whatever time frame you scheduled).

Sure, they may act like they can’t survive without you, but trust me, they can. It will be good for both sides to spend some time apart. They will probably even appreciate everything you do for them more when they have to go without it for a while.

  1. Ask for it!

The holidays are coming up when people ask you what you want for as a gift tell them you want the gift of time. Perhaps there is a class you want to take, or a hobby you already enjoy but need extra supplies for.

Ask for that as a gift. Gifts are always supposed to be personal and what the recipient really needs. What do you need more than just to relax and enjoy things that make you happy?

When was the last time you took time for yourself? It’s not being selfish, it’s necessary. I’d love to hear your tips on finding time for yourself when living a hectic lifestyle.

Most people that do not take proper “me time” struggle with loving themselves and valuing themselves. This is a major struggle and a symptom of depression. Depression is one of the most common forms of mental illness.

We can control depression with proper care. One way is with a depression safety plan. This is a plan you put into place before your depression gets severe. You make a plan of whom to call when you need to reach out to someone.

6 Strategies for learning to love yourself

Learning to love yourself is an important key to finding me time. We all need me time. It helps our personal and professional relationships.

  1. Accept yourself.

Know that you are worthy of love and respect, just the way you are this moment. Embrace yourself with all your strengths and weaknesses.

2. Clarify your purpose.

Invent your own definition of success. Ask yourself what a meaningful life means to you, even if that answer changes.

3. Talk yourself up.

How do you speak to yourself? Choose words that are encouraging and uplifting. Use your internal dialogue to build your confidence and manage your emotions.

4. Offer forgiveness

Let go of the past so that you can move on. Take any decisions that you regret and turn them into opportunities to learn. Make amends where possible and resolve to handle things more constructively in the future.

5. Avoid comparisons.

Facebook didn’t invent social comparisons, but social media has increased the potential for envy and inferiority complexes. Try competing with your last performance instead of living up to someone else’s standards. You’ll accomplish more if you dare to be yourself.

6. Think positive.

Looking on the bright side and being able to laugh at yourself makes you even more loveable. It also helps you to manage stress and deal with difficult circumstances.

It’s time to prioritize your mental health and well-being. We’re here for you, so don’t be afraid to reach out! If it feels like you are always busy and never have enough downtime, this might show a lifestyle imbalance. You deserve some me time too! There is no shame in letting others know you need space from them now and then – especially if they are taking up all the oxygen in the room with their constant worry or criticism.

Reach out when things get overwhelming; we want to help make sure everyone has a break as needed. The more mindful we can become about our emotional needs, the better able we’ll be at maintaining a balance between work and life outside of work.
