What is an emergency medication list?

An emergency medication list is a document that lists all of the medications you take on a regular basis. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. It’s important to have this information handy in case of an emergency. If something happens and you can’t remember what medications you’re supposed to take, your doctor will be able to help you get back on track.

I have recurrent stomach issues that cause intense pain and nausea/vomiting. I ended up going to the emergency room due to the pain and nausea. At that moment it was hard for me to concentrate and think. I can not answer the question from the medical team about what medications I’m on. Having an emergency medication list handy to simply hand them is important. Not only is it a time saver (they can just read/verify what I’m on), it is beneficial because I can not speak very well and it has a spot on the bottom of the list for the medications that I am allergic to.

What are the 4 reasons you need an emergency medication list?

I shared my personal reasons for having an emergency medication list. Here are 4 other reasons to have one.

1. To prevent drug interactions.

If you take multiple medications, it’s important to make sure that they don’t interact with each other. An emergency medication list can help prevent dangerous drug interactions.

In the event of an emergency, you may not be able to communicate with your doctor about your medications. Having an emergency medication list will ensure that medical professionals will be able to provide you with the correct treatment.

It’s important to keep your emergency medication list up-to-date. Make sure to include any new medications that you start taking, and remove any drugs that you no longer take.

2. Having a list of not only your medications but those of a family member is important in case of an emergency.

It’s important to have a complete list of all the medications that your family members take. imagine there is an emergency and you suddenly have to remember what medications your family member is on or yourself. A printed list is a great way to take that burden off of you. You can have a list saved for each family member in a central location.

3. Another reason to keep track of your medication is that of side effects and drug allergies.

A physician’s job is to help keep you healthy, it’s impossible for them to remember everything about everyone. Mistakes can happen. Sometimes you are allergic to just one medication. You can also be allergic to everything in that drug family. Example: I have a sensitivity to penicillin that is listed as being allergic but I can take over antibiotics that are in the “cillin” family such as amoxicillin.

4. I started to do this for my husband for his mental health care providers.

He has absolutely no idea what medications he’s on. His standard answer when they ask him is “Ask my wife”. This is both good and bad. Bad because it’s his health, so he should know. Good because at least he knows that I have that information!

An emergency medication list is important for everyone, not just those with chronic health conditions. If you’re taking medications for a mental health condition, it’s important to have an emergency medication list on hand.

If something happens and you can’t remember what medications you’re supposed to take, your doctor will be able to help you get back on track.

  • Drug allergies

You can find a blank emergency medication list online or download a printable version. There are also apps available that allow you to store your information electronically.

Keep in mind, that an emergency medication list should be tailored to your individual needs. Be sure to discuss your list with your doctor and update it as needed.
