4 Tips for Meal Planning on a Budget
There are many meal planning strategies that can help you save money. From meal-planning services to meal kits, there are plenty of options for those looking to be healthy on a budget. But meal planning isn’t the only way to save money when it comes to food. Below we will discuss 4 tips for meal planning on a budget:
When you’re trying to save money and be healthy at the same time, meal planning can seem like a daunting task. It’s not always easy planning out what we want to eat for the week – especially when we have so many other things going on in our lives. But it doesn’t need to feel that way!
I am always worried about our budget and making sure we have enough food in the house for the month. My husband, on the other hand, does not worry about money or groceries. He can live on ramen noodles and water and be happy. I like to eat well, and yet make sure there is money in the bank account at the end of the month in case of an emergency.
We all are finding ourselves with tighter budgets these days for various reasons. The price of groceries is going up as well at the same time. There are ways to save on our grocery bills though. These tips may be hard to get into a routine doing at first, but they will soon become second nature and you’ll find that meal planning on a budget is not really all that hard.

4 Tips for meal planning on a budget
1. Learn to stock your kitchen
When shopping for groceries, consider buying in bulk to save money. Recipes that call on versatile ingredients such as rice or beans will help you make more meals with the same amount of food and avoid wasting anything!
One of the best money-saving gifts you can give yourself is a well-stocked pantry. When you have all sorts of spices, salts, and other cooking staples at your disposal it will save time in starting from scratch for every meal.

2. Create a budget
Create a budget for how much you want to spend on groceries per week, or for the month. Then it is time to get creative to make sure you stay under budget. This does not have to be stressful. Actually, just the opposite is true. It can be a game and you can see how close to your budget you can get.
Here are some tips for staying within your budget.
The best way to save money on groceries is by making a list and sticking with it. It’s easy when you know what your family will be eating, so buy only as much as necessary for that week’s menu!
Before you go grocery shopping it is important to inventory what ingredients are in your fridge and freezer. You may be surprised by all of the food that can come together with just these basic ingredients!
Dinner should be wholesome and tasty. A good dinner doesn’t need to include anything elaborate, like gourmet ingredients or high-end spices – it’s all about balance! You can make your chicken taste even better by pairing it with some veggies for an easy one-pot meal (or two).
Staying on track with your budget will be much easier when you plan and prep meals ahead. Planning out the week’s menu for each day takes up less time than cooking every night after work, so it becomes a habit over something new to remember!
3. There are health benefits to meal planning
Planning your meals in advance will make it easier to stay on track with healthy eating. You’ll be less tempted if you’ve already planned what’s for dinner, so when the time comes around there won’t be anything stopping you from cooking up a delicious meal or grabbing something nutritious at a fast food joint instead of ordering take-out which is often high fat and/or sugar!
You can even do batch cooking. What is batch cooking? That means preparing your meals ahead of time and freezing them so that all you have to do is heat them up so that you have fresh homecooked meals ready at a moment’s notice. This is a great way to eat healthily, and practice meal planning on a budget.

4. Watch where/how you shop for groceries
As I mentioned, the cost of groceries is going up across the nation. This requires us to change the way we shop if we are on a budget. One way to do this is to shop via sales or even at discount stores. We have all heard of Aldi’s. Have you shopped there yet?
My friend Amiyrah at 4 hats frugal has a great post about shopping weekly or monthly at Aldi’s and staying within your budget. She has a family of 5 and makes it work.

We shop at Aldi’s a lot ourselves and love them. I love that they are on instacart and I can have them delivered directly to the house! This is great for my high pain days and chronic illness. I can get healthy food in the house without having to leave the house to go and get them.
With these 4 tips, you’ll be able to start meal planning on a budget and never have to worry about your grocery bill again. You may even find that the time spent meal prepping is worth it as well because of how much money you save in the long run! We want nothing more than for people just like yourself to not only feel good but live their life with less stress and anxiety surrounding food budgets or what they can afford at local markets.
