It is easy to dwell on things in the past. You might have a deep reason for doing this, like the death of someone you loved. Other times it might be too difficult when your parents split up and now every time they talk about their divorce, you get upset. Sometimes we just need help letting go of all that baggage and moving forward with our lives!

The past is like a memory. The future is just a dream. You can only be happy in the present. If you hold on to the past, it will never come true. The hardest part of any change is starting that first decision, so I urge you on! Start now!

My personal experience with quit living in the past.
My husband has a problem with living in the past. I am always telling him to quit living in the past. It is obviously easier said than done. He has both Bipolar and PTSD which makes it even hard to let go of the past.
I know him well enough to know when he is dwelling on the past too much. I gently remind him that you can not change the past. By dwelling on the past that you can not change, it is robbing you of your present and future.

8 effective ways to quit living in the past
1. Focus on the present
For those who are haunted by what happened in the past, it is time to stop worrying about it. It won’t work to go back or try again. We can only make today our best day. If we live like every second counts, there will not be as much regret later!
In order to be happy, you may need to let go of some negative thoughts. It’s all about your mindset – if you are too focused on what has happened in the past then there will be no room for happiness or joy in the present moment. You can decide whether or not this hurts yourself by choosing what type of thoughts are going through your head: one that is filled with regret over past mistakes and sadness because things did not turn out as planned; OR a more open-minded approach where today holds new opportunities and potential experiences which might bring pleasure into our lives instead!
2. With a grand gesture, decide to let go of the past and move forward.
You may need to “move on” and “let go” to make things work. If you do not, then things will keep going in circles. You could end up stuck in the past again. You can decide which choice empowers both your future self and yourself now. Choose this choice then take action so that change happens much sooner rather than later!

3. You have to forgive and forget.
It is hard to forget the effects of what we do. It can be difficult to forgive people who have hurt us. But forgiving others makes you feel better and happier. Forgiveness is a feeling that many people do not experience until they do it themselves!
Forgiving someone does not mean you agree with what they did. It means that you are ready to move on with your life. You can still remember the wrong they have done and know that it was wrong, but forgive them anyway.
4. Distance yourself from those that hurt you
It is important to stay close to people, but it is also important to take time for yourself. Sometimes even a little distance from someone can allow us the space and clarity needed to go on our own way – whether it be physical such as looking for 55+ communities and actually moving into a new home somewhere different, or mental space between yourself and another person; emotional separation within your surroundings by removing oneself completely from certain parts of their life they are not happy about.

5. You have to accept all aspects of yourself.
If you want to move on, you need to accept your past. You need to remember that these people were a part of your life and they should not define who you are. Instead, think about how they helped you get where you are today. It is important that we accept ourselves with all our flaws- both big and small – in order to live a happy life free from regret!
6. Don’t wait on the world to give you happiness.
You have the power to control your own feelings. Other people can’t make you feel anything. You are in control of your emotions, not them. If someone makes you feel bad, and they say something mean, then don’t listen to that person anymore. Brush it off like it is no big deal. It’s OK if someone doesn’t understand how we feel sometimes because everyone feels different about different things.

7. It’s easy to get caught up in your feelings.
When you are thinking about your feelings, think about the memories. If they make you happy, then it is a good thing. You should remember them, but if they make you feel bad and will affect your life in the present, then don’t think about them. Instead of thinking about them, think about something better instead!
8. One of the things you can do is to make contributions.
Put a smile on someone else’s face, and it will make you feel good too! You might not be able to imagine this at first, but it is one of the best things you can do to align with your true self. Take time to give a person a smile, say hello, or donate $5 for their favorite cause. This will help us all live in an even brighter world.
You will be OK. This article is made for you to help you move on from your past. It may seem hard right now, but we will cheer for you until your future is bright and sunny again!
