Mental health is a tricky subject for many people to talk about, and this is a real shame. It’s our responsibility as a society to normalize discussions on mental health, to help those who are experiencing times of struggle. The most important thing is that we all find coping strategies to deal with stress, along with simple practices to look after our mental health.
Table of Contents
1. Discuss your emotions
To properly look after your mental health, it’s essential to discuss your emotions openly. Feelings of sadness or anger need to be released as opposed to bottled up and hidden. Call upon the help of your close friends and family to talk out any problems, difficult feelings or stress. It’s especially important to do so during those times when you’re feeling particularly vulnerable. For some, it’s useful to invest in the services of a counselor or a life coach. It’s often valuable to discuss your issues and concerns with an impartial advisor who is separate from your daily life.
2. Limit your alcohol intake
Drinking alcohol in moderation is fine; however, it’s easy to get into the habit of having ‘one too many’, particularly after a hard day! When you consistently rely upon alcohol to relax, it can actually have negative effects on your mental health. Over time, you’ll start to feel sluggish, lethargic and anxious, and if these feelings persist, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. To look after your mental health, try limiting your intake or having a full detox to cleanse your body.
3. Try a journal
Journalling is a nurturing practice that can help to lift your spirits. You can write down your emotions, brainstorm your goals or write positive memories. When we write down our feelings, it can help us to access a therapeutic release. Writing can even help us come to powerful realizations that we may otherwise not have arrived at. Journaling apps such as Momento and Journey can be helpful if you prefer a tech-based journaling experience!
4. Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness is about learning to live in the now, appreciating and accepting the present moment, and always acting with intention. There are plenty of great books available that can help you to learn more about mindfulness. The practice can help you to feel calmer, more peaceful and content with your life.
5. Prioritize your physical health
Our physical and mental health is, of course, deeply connected. Failing to get one right can negatively impact the other. Commit to eating a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and essential vitamins. Keep up with all of your health care check-ups, including those eye checks and dental checks that many of us seem to forget about. Our teeth, in particular, are prone to damage which we may not always notice at first. For damages to the teeth, you might need a crown or perhaps dental inlays and Onlays. Such repairs are helpful to protect damaged areas from a buildup of bacteria.
6. Practice creativity
Indulging in creative activities helps us to raise our endorphin levels and to unwind. It’s never too late to take up a creative hobby and start reaping the benefits. Whether it’s creative writing, drawing, a musical instrument or knitting, try out a few and see which one you like best. Over time, you’ll really notice how much better you feel when you exercise your creative side!
7. Altruistic habits
Studies have indicated that altruistic people are actually happier than those who are less altruistic. When you give back to others, be it close friends or within your local community, you’ll soon start to feel more positive and content yourself. Look for a charity which means something to you, and offer your time by volunteering or an advocacy program. Whether it’s Mental Health America, Women’s Aid or Amnesty, there are many great causes out there to get involved with.
8. Self-care apps
Those who love an app will be pleased to know that there are many self-care apps available to boost your wellness levels. One example is Headspace; this app offers guided meditations on a variety of different themes, from sleep to relationships. If you’re looking to get into meditation, yet you aren’t sure where to start, Headspace is an excellent place to learn the ropes. Shine is an app that provides you with plenty of excellent self-improvement audio; themes include anxiety advice, gratitude practice, and tips to de-stress.
Looking after your mental health takes a little perseverance, it’s essential to find out the strategies that work best for you personally.
