The summer heat is in full swing, and you know what that means: the perfect excuse to cool off with a sparkling Paloma! This sparkling mocktail recipe will have your guests feeling refreshed all afternoon.

The Paloma is the national drink of Mexico. It is made with lime juice and grapefruit soda, but this recipe replaces the grapefruit soda with fresh pink grapefruits for a sweeter taste that tastes like summer in your mouth.

What is the best way to enjoy Paloma?

A highball glass is traditional, but if you do not have one, whiskey glass or stemless wine glass will do just fine.

What to serve with a sparkling Paloma?

A sparkling Paloma is a refreshing cocktail to serve at your next get-together. Here are some ideas for delicious appetizers and sides that will pair nicely with this drink:

  • light, crisp tortilla chips
  • fresh guacamole dip made with avocado, cilantro, lime juice, and tomato
  • fresh salsa made with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and jalapeño peppers
  • spicy black beans served over rice or quinoa
  • grilled corn on the cob slathered in butter and lime juice
  • peanuts for an extra saltiness that complements sparkling drinks well.

I feel since a sparkling Paloma is the official drink of Mexico, it goes without saying to pair it with your favorite Mexican dish. One of my favorite Mexican dishes is this easy Mexican casserole. It is an easy alternative to regular tacos.

A popular question is always what to pair with a cocktail. Some foods go perfectly with a certain drink. When you are entertaining you always want to make it the most enjoyable for your guests with a combination of the right food with the right drink. Although this is a mocktail drink, the food pairings are the same as if it had alcohol.

What goes in a sparkling Paloma?

We do not drink alcohol in my house so we are always looking for ways to create mocktails of drinks. It is easy to make a mocktail of the sparkling Paloma. Here is a list of the ingredients:

  • Himalayan rock salt, fine
  • 1 large lime, cut into wedges
  • Ice
  • 6 oz. fresh pink grapefruit juice
  • 1 T. fresh lime juice
  • 8 oz. Club soda
  • 2  10 oz. bourbon glasses

Tip: To make sure one large pink grapefruit yields 6 oz., use a manual juicer instead of an electric one. This way, more flavor will be squeezed out of all the layers, not just the top layer.

Garnish each glass with a few pieces of lime and grapefruit peel.

Add 1-2 teaspoons of powdered monk fruit simple syrup (see Non-Alcoholic Strawberry Daiquiri or Pina Colada mocktail recipes for instructions) or agave syrup, if desired.

How to make a non-alcoholic sparkling Paloma

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: n/a

Yields: 2 drinks

  1. Pour some Himalayan salt into a shallow dish. Add hot water and let it sit for 20 minutes. Let the salt dry before using it on glass rims to create texture. While you are waiting, soak the lime wedges in cold water so they are wet when you use them on your glasses too. Dip each rim of your glasses, one at a time, lightly running them through the salt between fingers or by pressing against the edge just enough to coat evenly all around without spilling over sides too much since that might get messy!

2. Fill each glass with ice. Then add grapefruit juice, club soda, and lime juice. Stir the mix for about 30 seconds or until you can’t see any more bubbles in the glasses. Then pour into 2 bourbon glasses evenly.

3. To enjoy this drink, garnish with lime and grapefruit.
